Several years ago, the Duke of High Gondylar married outside his station and Cyanne, the daughter and heir to the throne is targeted for assassination. The Duke entrusts Kestryl – the Bladesman, with the task of finding a safe place for Cyanne to hide and then announces that she has died. This makes room for Penthor to become the heir apparent and after a magical storm destroys the Duke and the Duchess pines away, Penthor becomes Duke.

Just before her death, The Duchess sends Kestryl on a quest to return Cyanne to Gondylar and assume the throne. The journey takes him on a long trip. Tanrif is a dock worker who is tied into a prophecy that has the entire assassins guild after him. He meets Cyannne and they fall in love. Other palace intrigues add to the danger as there are those with strange powers who do not want Penthor to lose the throne.

This is a very adventurous undertaking for Lazarowitz and he has taken several plot lines and tied them together very satisfactorily and plans two more books before the final die is cast in this page burning novel filled with action and even though a few questions are left unanswered (that’s why there are two more coming), this is a very satisfying read.
