Algis Budrys died on June 9, 2008. Algis was a dear friend. His most notable stories include "The End of Summer", "Nobody Bothers Gus", "The Edge of the Sea", "Wall of Crystal, Eye of Night", and "The Silent Eyes of Time". His first novel was False Night, revised as Some Will Not Die; later novels included Who?, The Falling Torch, classic Rogue Moon – about matter transmission and an alien labyrinth on the moon, an expansion of novella "Rogue Moon" included in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, The Amsirs and the Iron Thorn, Michaelmas, and Hard Landing. Many of his stories and novels were nominated for Hugos and Nebulas, which shows he was well liked by fans and pros alike. He wrote critical reviews for Galaxy and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in the 1960s and ‘70s. Since the mid 1980s he was associated with the Writers of the Future program for new writers, and he edited many of the annual L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future anthologies from 1985 to present. He was also editor of magazine Tomorrow Speculative Fiction, which lasted 24 issues from 1993 to 1997, -- which was one of the first zines to migrate from print to the web and was twice nominated for a Hugo Award in the semi-professional magazine category. He was the first person to pay me for writing and even though it never saw print, he was always a professional and helpful and instructive when he offered criticism. He will be missed by many and remembered by all those that he helped. Stan Winston, one of the masters of movie make-up and special effects, has died from complications of cancer. There are countless films that bear his touch. Alien, Aliens, Jurassic Park, The Terminator films, Roots, John Carpenter’s The Thing, Artificial Intelligence: AI, and many other genre films. He leaves behind a legacy of work that will possibly never be equaled. SF author, critic, and poet Thomas M. Disch, born 1940, died July 4, 2008, of suicide in his New York City apartment. Ellen Datlow reports that Disch had been depressed for several years, especially by the death of long-time partner Charles Naylor, and worries of eviction from his rent-controlled apartment. (From Locus Online) For those of you out there who have good health, be very thankful. My diabetes is causing more changes as I grow older. I’ve been having eye problems so my reading as suffered. I’ve gotten new glasses and now I’m able to read more. Water retention and triglycerides are other problems to address. My circulation is still very good, but I seem to be taking a pill for everything. Only problem there is that the side effects can be a problem at times. I’ve been listening to oldies and classic rock more than anything else. This is partially due to the satellite radio we listen to at work. That type of music goes with the ambience of the restaurant. Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift have been the current artists I keep up with. Barry |
