Hugh Cave, one of the last links to the pulps and the Weird Tales era of writers, died on June 27. He had just had a new biography; CAVE OF 1000 TALES by Milt Thomas, released by Arkham House (reviewed this issue). I first became aware of Cave through Karl Edward Wagner and the Carcosa publication of MURGUNSTRUMM AND OTHERS in the mid 1970s. Although I never had the opportunity to meet Cave, I enjoyed his writings as did many others. This is another issue jam packed with a marvelous collection of books. It is extremely pleasurable to see some of our favorite writers back with new books. There are also a lot of new writers that are beginning their careers with books that show promises of more to come. Look over the reviews and give some of them a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the books. Wilson Phillips has released a new cd after a number of years apart. It’s called "California" and is a collection of songs they grew up with. I’ve also been rediscovering The Troggs, Jim Steinman and Warren Zevon. Kathy likes Josh Groban and Clay Aiken. So as you can see, it’s a mixed music time right now. This issue has grown to gigantic proportions with all the reviews. I’ve got to hold off on some or restrict them back to strictly science fiction, fantasy and horror. But Harriet reads so many that I don’t see and the readers seem interested in the others, that it would be hard to not use them. Let me know how you feel about it. I hope everyone has a pleasant end of summer. Barry | |
