Brendell has been one of the most successful members of the Thieves Guild although he sometimes follows his own principles rather than those of the Guild. Now someone has taken out a contract on Brendell’s family and he must break into the Guild office and find out what is going on.

Brendell leaves the Guild and goes out on his own to find out what has caused his Guild to abandon him and if needed, to get even with those who has stolen from his family. In doing so Brendell ends up working for, then against the Assassin’s Guild as he helps the ruler of a weakened nation regain their stature. This leads to Brendell being brought to trial by the Combined Guilds with his life at stake.

Brendell is one of the more interesting characters that have been created by the creative mind that is Patrick Welch. This is a very enjoyable story and Brendell is true to his character and does whatever is necessary to solve his problems and those of his friends that he makes along the way. Welch is a terrific writer and this is a terrific volume.
