2005 is continuing to be a year of passing in the science fiction community. Just after I finished the last issue, notice came of Andre Norton’s death. I remember reading STARMAN’S SON and DAYBREAK 2250 AD early in my reading life and she immediately became a favorite. There is not much I can add to all that has already been written by others more qualified. Bill Bowers, a fellow fanzine editor of OUTWORLDS, has also died. He was nominated for a Hugo five times and published a fine zine that will be remembered in the future. Byron Priess was killed in an auto accident. He was one of the visionaries of the field. He put together writers and artists to create new characters. He was also a pioneer in digital media and was head of ibooks. He will be greatly missed. James Doohan who was best known as "Scotty" on Star Trek has died at the age of 85. He had other roles, but none brought him the recognition that this one did. NEW STEPHEN KING BOOK FROM GRANT Parke Godwin sent an email that his novel SHERWOOD has been optioned for a film. Let’s wish him luck that it gets made. It gives a different look at the Robin and Maid Marian saga. I hope to have more news about this and other projects in the near future. Music wise, I’ve been listing to Creedence Clearwater, Richard Marx, and Patty Smyth. New music by Faith Hill and Antigone Rising are the only new music I’ve been listening to lately. Hopefully, there will be others coming out soon. Hope to have issue 100 out on time in late September. If you are planning on attending DragonCon, I hope to see you there. Barry | |
